From gardeners and farmers to institutions and universities, plant breeding has been practiced worldwide since time began. International development agencies believe breeding new crops is important for ensuring the quality of nutrition in the products consumed by humans and animals. Developing new varieties that are higher yielding, disease resistant, drought tolerant, or regionally adapted to different environments and growing conditions is key to ensuring food security.

Our client asks you to apply your education, knowledge, and expertise as a Potato Breeder/Geneticist to create innovative and commercially competitive potato varieties in accordance with our client's breeding program objectives. Since its inception two years ago, our client's breeding program has consistently doubled and huge growth is anticipated. Investment is being made in a specific centre for this research; providing you with all the resources and tools required to be successful.

With continual expansion in the plans, we seek an individual with high energy levels and a great attitude to focus on potato storability, yield, and resistance to disease using the latest plant breeding technology.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain a well-planned, balanced, breeding program; setting research aims and objectives
  • Maximize the use of all human, technical, and financial resources
  • Plan, prepare and ensure proper disbursement of breeding program budget; producing project plans
  • Identify desirable genetic traits and cross plants to produce new breeding material
  • Coordinate, implement and manage all breeding trials/field trials
  • Analyze and scientifically assess new breeding material in laboratory, greenhouse and field trials
  • Coordinate the development activities in greenhouse and field with research team and growers
  • Develop, evaluate, and recommend new methods and technologies to improve potato breeding
  • Share/collaborate research and germplasm exchanges
  • Continuously learn through regular industry literature and scientific community contact
  • Collaborate with Agronomists and Researchers; develop cultural management profiles for varieties
  • Multiply and produce virus-free plants
  • Collaborate with seed production managers to produce newly developed varieties of breeding materials
  • Thoroughly keep records of research, findings, and development cycle
  • Align program strategies based on competitive market intelligence
  • Ensure appropriate germplasm protection and internal procedures (PVP) are implemented; register new varieties
  • Liaise between client and government, university, and other industry members regarding research programs
  • Manage, support, and train breeding associates, technical, and field staff
To be successful in this position, our client has identified the following requirements:
  • MSc/Ph.D. in Plant Breeding (or equivalent science)
  • 4+ years experience in a commercial plant breeding program (potato highly preferred)
  • Proficient in English; Spanish or French an asset
  • High level of integrity and accountability
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • A people person with developed leadership skills
  • Ability to work well with the team; sharing findings and information
  • Superior communication skills and the ability to adapt your communication based on the audience - to keep it simple or get technical as required
  • Ability to manage a laboratory
  • Ability to analyze and communicate information effectively and accurately
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
  • Demonstrate initiative, patience, and resilience
  • Technically proficient and accurate; excellent research skills
  • A valid drivers' license
  • A Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN)
